HazCom Standard

OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (HCS), sometimes referred to the HazCom Standard, is designed to ensure the safe handling of hazardous chemicals in the workplace. This standard requires employers to inform and train employees about the potential hazards of chemicals they may encounter on the job. Key components of the HCS include comprehensive labeling of chemical containers with hazard warnings, providing safety data sheets (SDS) detailing chemical properties and safety precautions, and conducting employee training programs on chemical hazards and safe handling practices. The goal of the HazCom Standard is to empower workers with the knowledge and tools needed to protect themselves from chemical-related injuries or illnesses, thereby promoting a safer and healthier work environment. Compliance with this standard not only reduces workplace accidents, but also ensures regulatory compliance and fosters a culture of safety within organizations.  Typically, the HazCom Standard pertains to facilities employees while the Lab Standard applies to scientific staff.
