Usage guidelines for corrosive chemicals are essential to ensure safe handling and minimize the risk of injury or damage. Here’s a summary of key guidelines:

  1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear appropriate PPE, including chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles or face shield, lab coat or apron, and closed-toe shoes, to protect against skin and eye contact.
  2. Ventilation: Work in a well-ventilated area to minimize exposure to corrosive vapors, fumes, or mists. Use local exhaust ventilation or fume hoods when handling corrosive chemicals indoors.
  3. Storage: Store corrosive chemicals in designated areas away from incompatible substances, heat sources, and direct sunlight. Use secure cabinets or storage containers to prevent spills, leaks, or accidental contact.  Corrosive materials should be stored below eye level to reduce the probability of splashing the chemical into the eyes.  Corrosives can corrode materials with which they contact and may be highly reactive with other substances.  It is important to review information regarding the materials they may corrode, and their reactivity with other substances.  In most cases, these materials should be segregated from other chemicals and require secondary containment when in storage.
