Mechanical Hazards

Mechanical hazards in the laboratory encompass a wide range of risks associated with machinery, equipment, tools, and moving parts. Here’s a summary of mechanical hazards and how to prevent injuries:

Mechanical Hazards:

  1. Moving Machinery: Equipment such as centrifuges, mixers, or grinders may have rotating or moving parts that can entangle or crush body parts if personnel come into contact with them during operation.  This “lessons learned” helps illustrate the potential risk.
  2. High-Speed Rotating Equipment: Laboratory machinery with high-speed rotating components, such as centrifuges or rotary evaporators, can eject objects or cause projectiles if components fail or become unbalanced.
  3. Sharp Objects and Tools: Laboratory tools, instruments, or glassware may have sharp edges, blades, or points that can cause cuts, punctures, or lacerations if mishandled or improperly stored.
  4. Pinch Points: Equipment with moving parts, hinges, or mechanical assemblies may have pinch points where body parts can be caught or compressed, resulting in pinch injuries or crush accidents.
  5. Falling Objects: Overhead storage, shelving, or equipment may pose risks of falling objects if items are improperly stacked, stored, or secured. Falling objects can cause head injuries, fractures, or impact injuries to personnel below.

Prevention Measures:

  1. Machine Guarding: Install machine guards, barriers, or enclosures to prevent access to moving parts or pinch points on machinery and equipment. Ensure that guards are securely fastened, properly adjusted, and maintained to prevent tampering or bypassing.
  2. Safety Interlocks: Use safety interlocks, emergency stops, or machine shutdown mechanisms to automatically stop equipment or machinery if safety hazards are detected, such as door openings, sensor activations, or abnormal vibrations.
  3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Provide appropriate PPE, such as safety glasses, gloves, or steel-toed shoes, to personnel working with or around machinery, tools, or equipment to protect against impact, cuts, or puncture injuries.
  4. Secure Loose Clothing and Hair:  Tie back loose hair and avoid wearing loose clothing near machinery.
  5. Safe Work Practices: Establish and enforce safe work practices for operating, maintaining, and servicing machinery and equipment in the laboratory. Train personnel on proper equipment handling, tool use, and material handling techniques to minimize risks of injury.
  6. Equipment Inspection and Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections, maintenance, and testing of machinery, tools, and equipment to ensure proper functioning, alignment, and condition. Repair or replace damaged or defective components promptly to prevent accidents or malfunctions.
  7. Housekeeping and Organization: Keep work areas clean, organized, and free of clutter to minimize tripping hazards, obstruction of emergency exits, or accidental contact with sharp objects or moving parts. Implement storage racks, bins, or cabinets to secure tools and materials when not in use.
  8. Safety Training and Awareness: Provide comprehensive safety training to laboratory personnel on recognizing, assessing, and mitigating mechanical hazards in the workplace. Encourage active participation in safety programs, hazard reporting, and near-miss reporting to promote a culture of safety awareness.
