Regulatory Requirements

At the Appalachian Lab, our personnel fall under the umbrella of two different programs under the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA):

  • 29 CFR 1910.1450 – Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories, also known as the Lab Standard
  • 29 CRF 1910.1200 – Hazardous Communication Standard, also known as the HazCom Standard or Right to Know

The Laboratory Standard applies to research activities in laboratories and the HazCom Standard applies to activities unrelated to laboratory research, which includes facilities and custodial staff.

Our initial safety training and the content provided here cover aspects of both the HazCom and Laboratory Standard.  If you are ever unsure which standard applies to your work, please contact Katie Kline.
