The use of respirators in labs to protect from chemical exposure is strongly discouraged.  Engineering controls, like fume hoods, should always be used in preference to respirators.  The use of respirators is only permitted in cases where engineering controls are not feasible.  Any individuals that need to use a respirator must be enrolled in a respirator program, which will include physician approval, training, and fit-testing.
