Specimen Collection

UMCES collecting permits are issued to all field workers for biological monitoring.  Depending on your planned activities and the state, or states, in which you plan to work, you may need to undertake additional steps in order to collect field specimens.  Contact Kristen Harper if you have not been issued an UMCES Collecting Permit.

It is your responsibility to research the specific requirements for each activity and location.   Here are links to Maryland’s plus some other nearby states’ websites related to their scientific collection permit application process.

Anyone working with vertebrates (in the field or in the lab) must develop and submit for approval a plan that complies with the Federal Animal Welfare Act under the UMCES Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, or IACUC.

Considering all potential hazards associated with your field work should be the next step in your planning process.
