UMCES Appalachian Laboratory is committed to provide a safety and healthy campus for faculty, staff, students, and visitors.  The primary objective of the fire safety program is to recognize hazardous conditions and to take appropriate action before such condition(s) results in a fire emergency.

This goal is accomplished by the following:

• Establishing and conducting annual reviews and updating fire prevention policies.
• Conducting evacuation fire drills on campus multiple times per year.
• Providing fire extinguisher training to students and employees.
• Inspecting, testing, and maintaining fire protection systems in accordance with federal, state, and local standards.
• Conducting regular campus fire and safety inspections.

It’s important to make yourself aware of how to respond BEFORE you experience a fire.  Familiarize yourself with the building floor plan and all possible exits from your work location(s) in the building.  Remember that your visibility may be impaired during an actual fire.  Counting the number of doors between your work area and the exits can be helpful to prevent yourself from becoming disoriented.

Fire safety is also important off campus as well.  The following video was developed through a a Department of Homeland Security Fire Prevention and Safety grant and developed through the collaborative efforts of the Clery Center for Security On Campus, Campus Firewatch, Michael H. Minger Foundation, Rowan University, University of Pennsylvania, and the Philadelphia Fire Department.  It helps to raise awareness about fire safety in off campus housing.
